In a stunning turn of events, Emma Raducanu is feeling fueled by her 2021 US Open triumph as she gears up to make a strong showing at this year’s tournament. After shocking the tennis world three years ago with a grand slam victory at just 18 years old, the British sensation is now back at Flushing Meadows, fully healthy and brimming with newfound maturity. Her first challenge? A showdown against fellow slam winner Sofia Kenin in the opening round.

Despite facing a tumultuous two years plagued by injuries, Raducanu’s resurgence in 2024 has injected a fresh sense of hope and determination into her game. Returning to the scene of her historic US Open win, she finds renewed inspiration in her past success.

After a solid performance at Wimbledon, where she reached the last 16, Raducanu opted to skip the Olympics and instead competed in the Citi Open in Washington, narrowly missing out on a spot in the semi-finals. While her unconventional scheduling choices raised some eyebrows, Raducanu appears to be in a positive mindset as she approaches the final major of the year.

“I feel a lot better. I feel very proud when I come here,” Raducanu shared. “Walking past my photo every day, walking past my name on the trophy every day … I think that’s such an epic achievement. For me, coming back here now I come back with such a different outlook and just joy and proudness and it inspires me to want to do more.”

Since her dominant 2021 victory in New York, where she didn’t drop a single set en route to the title, Raducanu has faced numerous setbacks in her career. The experience forced her to mature quickly, with the Brit acknowledging that she had been “extremely naive” in the past. Now, with a clean bill of health and a newfound confidence, she is prepared to take on the challenge of defending her US Open crown.

“Yeah, I would say I was a lot more nervous and I think I felt pressure more,” Raducanu reflected on the prospect of defending her title. Choosing to prioritize her physical well-being, she declined a wildcard offer and focused on her recovery and return to competitive play.

“Yeah, I mean I stand by the decision not to play the Olympics,” she emphasized. “I don’t need to chase and switch surfaces at this point in my recovery and my rehab and my return to playing.”

As Raducanu prepares to embark on her US Open journey once again, she is fueled by the memories of her past success and driven by a newfound sense of purpose. With her eyes set on making a deep run in the tournament, she is determined to prove that her 2021 triumph was just the beginning of a remarkable career.
