Jack Grealish cut an angry figure as left the field after Newcastle United’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City.
The England midfielder is an unpopular character within the Newcastle fanbase after his 2022 comments about Miguel Almiron during Man City’s title celebrations when he took an uncalled for drunken swipe at the Paraguay star with the clip ending up on social media.
As the champions failed to take three points at St James’ Park, Toon fans were keen to remind Grealish as he left the field. Grealish responded with a “shush” gesture just before he went down the tunnel after being ushered away.
It was a clear sign Newcastle, like Arsenal in the game before, had got under the skin of Man City on a day when the champions had rolled into St James’ Park keen to extend their lead at the top of the table.
Man City’s commentary feed also suggested that Newcastle should not have had a penalty in the second half. The club stated: “It sounds like sour grapes, but it’s not – Gordon takes the ball too wide, clears Ederson, kicks the ground and goes down.
“VAR can see the same pictures, so the decision should have been to send the ref to the monitor. I’ll leave it there as probably going on a bit – these things do happen in football but such a shame we have the technology to correct a mistake and so often that doesn’t happen.”
Has Anthony Gordon confirmed he has agreed a new contract?
The day was set up for Gordon really after the fantastic flag display for the ex-Everton star before the game. A six-year contract is believed to be agreed subject to an announcement in due course.
Gordon loved the fact that his initials and number were displayed by the East Stand with the Gallowgate End also paying tribute. But after the celebrations had died down a bit at the Leazes End, the England international turned round and patted the club crest.
It felt like a clear indication he will be on Tyneside to stay after summer talk of Liverpool back in June. And how Newcastle will need them if they are to live with teams like Man City moving forward.
Fortress St James’ Park rediscovering old reputation
The 1-1 draw against Man City means that it’s now a dozen games unbeaten for Newcastle at St James’ Park since Man City triumphed here back in January in the last minute.
After losing the unbeaten tag in the 2024/25 season last weekend, the Magpies can at least boast they are yet to lose on home soil this term and that backs up a good run from the previous campaign. However, Newcastle are some way off the class of the Entertainers who went from 23rd February 1994 to 8th April 1995 unscathed in a 26-game run.
