Taylor Fritz shared his thoughts on something strange that has taken place during his 2024 campaign.
The 26-year-old has enjoyed a solid year in which he is firmly back in the top 10 and reached his first Grand Slam final at the US Open.
The American is now aiming to win the first Masters 1000 title of his career in Shanghai and build momentum towards November’s ATP Finals.
He defeated Japanese qualifier Yosuke Watanuki to reach the last 16 of the Shanghai Masters 1000 event for the first time.
Why has Taylor Fritz had more success on clay than hard courts at Masters 1000 level in 2024?
Taylor Fritz has stepped up at Grand Slam level this year but he has yet to replicate that form at Masters 1000 level.
He has not won a Masters 1000 event since the 2022 Indian Wells Masters, an event he thoroughly enjoys playing.
But in 2024, not only has Fritz not won at this level, but his better results have come on clay, his weakest surface.
“A little bit [surprised] yeah, I feel like normally the stretch where I pick up a lot of points is that Indian Wells and Miami stretch, but I wasn’t playing my best tennis at that point,” Fritz said during his on-court interview after beating Watanuki.
“I feel like the clay court season is where I started to pick up some momentum and I was feeling really good about my game.
