It has been an intense race for the ATP Finals in Turin, with the year-end rankings table taking an interesting turn following a resurgence of Novak Djokovic. While players like Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, and Alexander Zverev have dominated the ATP circuit this year, there are a host of players vying for the coveted ATP Finals spot. Among them is Djokovic, who has been on the uprise ever since his resurgence at the Wimbledon Championships.
Despite being 37, Djokovic is still among the top players in the world currently. Playing in the Shanghai Masters this week, he is into the semifinal of the tournament after some gritty performances. This clearly proves that he still has the hunger to succeed at this age, as he has risen to the seventh spot in the year-end table. With his quarterfinal win in Shanghai, Djokovic has 3660 ranking points this year, which puts him in the 7th position. The qualification bar for the ATP Finals is set at 5095 points. The other players vying for the spot in Turin include Daniil Medvedev and Taylor Fritz, who remain in the fourth and the fifth spot, respectively.
Further, Jannik Sinner leads the pack with 9730 points after winning the Australian Open and the US Open, along with a host of other big titles this season. Subsequently, Carlos Alcaraz takes the second spot after having won the French Open and the Wimbledon Championships. Along with the duo, Alexander Zverev has also qualified for the ATP Finals after putting on consistent performances tournament after tournament.

While he is in contention for the ATP Finals spot, Djokovic suffered a huge injury scare during his quarterfinal win over Jakub Mensik in Shanghai. However, he addressed the situation after the match and remained hopeful.

There has been a regular taping on Djokovic’s knee after his surgery earlier this year and he seemed to be in trouble again in Shanghai. During his quarterfinal match, he was seen grabbing his knee and looked in visible discomfort. Despite this injury concern, Djokovic continued and snatched a comeback win. After the match, he addressed the concerns with his knee.
Djokovic said, “Yeah, I mean, it’s a strange feeling, to be honest, those couple of points in that game, but after that it was fine. So, hopefully when it cools down I’m not going to have any troubles with it, because I already have troubles with the right knee, so it wouldn’t be great. Yeah, let’s see what tomorrow brings.”
Earlier this season, Djokovic had to pull out from the French Open quarterfinals due to the same reason. Despite having undergone surgery, he came back swiftly and went on to reach the final of the Wimbledon Championships. While the Serb has quashed any rumors of his injury, the 24-time Grand Slam champion will have to bank on his grit and determination to lift the title in Shanghai. He next faces Taylor Fritz, who is yet to lose a set in the tournament.
