Iga Swiatek is locked in a fierce battle with Aryna Sabalenka to end the year as WTA number one.

Swiatek split with former coach Tomasz Wiktorowski earlier this month after three years of working together.

Swiatek won her fourth French Open title this year, which was her and Wiktorowski’s fourth grand slam title together after the Pole’s success at Roland Garros in 2020 before the coach joined her team.

The tennis world was unsurprisingly shocked when the news arrived that the pair were moving on from one another, concluding one of the most successful partnerships in recent times.

Iga Swiatek’s ex-coach Tomasz Wiktorowski claims split was ‘simply necessary’

Following the split between Swiatek and Wiktorowski, there had been rumors that the increasing influence of Swiatek’s sports psychologist Daria Abramowicz may have played a role in Wiktorowski’s departure.

Swiatek’s former coach hadn’t commented on the split until recently when he spoke with Polish site WP SportoweFakty, where he seemingly shut down those rumors.

“I believe that in general, we had very good relations in the team,” said Wiktoworski.

“During our three-year intensive cooperation, it is impossible to avoid difficult situations, but even then we have always found a way to reach an agreement and get back on track.

“Our priority has always been Iga.”

When asked about the conclusion of their partnership, Wiktorowski claimed that it wasn’t an impulse decision.

“It was simply necessary. We have never made sudden, and above all, ill-considered decisions,” said Wiktorowski.

When will Swiatek decide on her next coach?

As Swiatek stated when announcing the split with her former coach, she intends to make a decision on a new coach within the next few weeks.

What some fans were surprised to see is that the Pole is specifically in talks with ‘coaches from abroad’, as she prepares to take the next step in her career.

With her recent dominance on clay courts, a coach with experience on grass and hard courts could be helpful, as Swiatek looks to improve her performances at Wimbledon, after failing to progress from the third round this year.

The 23-year-old did say that she would inform fans, if and when she makes her decision.

She will return to action at the WTA Finals in Saudi Arabia next month, where she is the defending champion.
