American tennis sensation Ben Shelton is set to return to the ASB Classic in Auckland this summer, marking his third consecutive appearance at this prestigious tournament.
The 22-year-old powerhouse, who achieved a career-high ranking of No. 13 earlier this year, is part of a trio of emerging talents breaking into the ATP’s top 20. Shelton aims to kickstart his 2025 season by claiming the coveted ASB Classic trophy, after demonstrating impressive form with a round of 16 finish in 2023 and reaching the semifinals this year.
“Ben is undoubtedly one of the most thrilling young athletes in our sport,” remarked Nicolas Lamperin, tournament director for the ASB Classic. “His athleticism and skill make him a standout performer, representing a new wave of young players who are revitalising tennis worldwide.”
Reflecting on his meteoric rise, Shelton shared his thoughts on adjusting to the spotlight that comes with early success. “My career took off quite quickly, and with it came a level of success I wasn’t entirely prepared for,” he said. “This past year, I’ve worked hard to establish myself on the tour as a consistent competitor, one who is regularly winning matches each week.”
“Now, my focus is on taking it up a notch and competing for titles on a more frequent basis. I’ve dedicated a lot of time and effort over the past 12 to 18 months, and rather than seeking quick results, I trust that my commitment will yield dividends in the long run. I have lofty ambitions in this sport.”
His diligence paid off in 2024, with Shelton clinching his second ATP title in Houston and making strong showings with semifinal placements in Auckland, Dallas, and Washington, alongside a quarterfinal run at the prestigious 1000-level Cincinnati tournament.
In addition to his on-court success, Shelton expressed his fondness for Auckland, both inside and outside the arena. “I cherish the opportunity to play in Auckland each year,” he shared. “The fans are fantastic, and the people of New Zealand truly make it special. Auckland is a vibrant city with incredible food – it feels like a home away from home for me.”
