Alex de Minaur finds his aspirations for qualifying for the ATP Finals hanging by a thread as he heads into the Paris Masters.
The elite competition, known as the ‘Race to Turin’, sees the top eight players from the calendar year secure their places for the season culmination, set to take place in the iconic Italian city from November 10-17.
Following his first foray into the top 10, De Minaur faced a setback with injury during the fourth round at Wimbledon, which has led to ongoing fitness challenges throughout the remainder of the season.
The Aussie is now on a mission to qualify for the ATP Finals for the very first time.
Currently positioned ninth in the ‘Race to Turin’, De Minaur’s path to the finals is narrow, with only the top eight securing their spot.
To keep his hopes alive, he must either overtake a competitor ahead of him in the standings or hope for a withdrawal from a player already qualified.
Notably, Novak Djokovic has announced his withdrawal from the Paris Masters, which opens a potential window for De Minaur if he can capitalize on the opportunity.
For De Minaur to enter the coveted top eight, he will need to not only reach at least the quarter-finals but also rely on eighth-placed Andrey Rublev to exit the tournament prematurely.
A deeper run than the quarter-finals will certainly enhance De Minaur’s chances.
In fact, clinching the Paris Masters title would guarantee his advancement past Djokovic in the standings.
