Rennae Stubbs predicts if Alex de Minaur will play for Australia at the Davis Cup finals in November
The Australian player has kept his hopes of reaching the event alive with a win over Mariano Navone and he will want to go deep in France.
De Minaur has left things a little bit late in the quest to reach the ATP Tour Finals but with Miomir Kecmanovic next up in his quest to claim victory in Paris.
Reaching the semi-finals would see him pass Novak Djokovic and Casper Ruud in the race, whilst reaching the final or winning the event would confirm his place in Turin.
De Minaur would dearly love to leave nothing to chance and he will be desperate to get himself included in the prestigious end-of-season event.
Rennae Stubbs quizzed on Alex de Minaur participation in the Davis Cup
Although the 25-year-old will be keen to get himself into the ATP Finals, there is still the small matter of the Davis Cup.
Right now, De Minaur isn’t in the current Australia squad for the Davis Cup with that event also taking place next month.
Australia have a huge last-eight showdown with the USA and Stubbs has been asked why she doesn’t believe De Minaur has been in the squad.
The former Australian player said on her Rennae Stubbs podcast: “Your question is as good as my answer. I don’t know.
“Maybe he is just tired, maybe he has said let’s see how I feel after, he is trying to make the ATP Finals, so I think all his focus is on that.
“Maybe he doesn’t want to give an answer to Davis Cup yet but if there is an opportunity to play I would guarantee that he probably will.
“Especially in Spain, he is Spanish-speaking, he lives in Spain most of the time so I would be surprised if he doesn’t play.”
Australia have to pick De Minaur if he’s willing to play in the Davis Cup
De Minaur hasn’t been able to achieve any career-best runs at the Grand Slam events this year but at the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open he reached the last eight.
That highlights that he’s a dangerous player on the tour and as the world number 10, he’s clearly a talented player.
As a result, Australia really could do with him on the Davis Cup team as they aim to overcome a pretty formidable-looking USA.
De Minaur was unlucky at Wimbledon back in July when a hip injury meant that he had to withdraw from his last eight match with Novak Djokovic.
He’s returned in good form though and although his eyes are firmly on Turin at the moment, from an Australian point of view the hope will be that he plays in the Davis Cup next month too.
