Murray’s post also piqued the attention of former Davis Cup team-mate Neal Skupski, who said: “Such a clown,” while the official Cincinnati Open account posed the question: “Is everything ok, Andy?”

Others pointed out that Murray’s choice of colours would have seen him barred from Wimbledon. His mother Judy also chimed in, reposting the image on X (formerly Twitter) with the caption: “This is what happens when you have too much time on your hands.”

Murray appears to be enjoying life in retirement after playing his final tournament at the Olympics in the summer. He recently insisted that he was not missing tennis, saying that he felt ‘really free’ and underlining his desire to spend more time with his family.

“Since I’ve stopped, I feel really free and have got lots of time to do whatever it is I want,” he told BBC Radio 4. “I can dedicate time to my children and have free time to play golf or go to the gym on my own terms. It is really nice and I didn’t expect that.

“I was expecting to find retirement hard and be missing tennis a lot and wanting to get back on the tennis court on tour. So far it has been the complete opposite to what I was thinking.”
