Alex de Minaur has had the best year of his career in 2024, reaching a career-high of sixth in the world.
De Minaur has impressed throughout the year on the ATP Tour earning a lot of new fans with his high-intensity style.
The Australian made three Grand Slam quarter-finals this season at the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open, also picking up two ATP titles along the way.
De Minaur won the Mexican Open for a second time in 2024, and took home the title on the grass in the Netherlands.
His fast pace did eventually hurt him however, as De Minaur withdrew from Wimbledon at the quarter-final stage due to injury, giving Novak Djokovic a bye to the semis.
Injuries plagued him once more at Grand Slam level as De Minaur was injured at the US Open, falling to Jack Draper in the quarter-finals.
Injury troubles haven’t dampened the Australian’s spirits, and his recent announcement shows that De Minaur is looking at the bigger picture.
Alex de Minaur’s new idea is ‘terrific’ say tennis fans
De Minaur has been impressing fans with his performances in 2024 but has recently announced a new initiative that aims to help the next generation of Australian tennis stars.
The De Minaur Junior Tour will hold over 250 junior tournaments throughout the year in Australia, with the top players qualifying for the De Minaur finals.
The boy and girl who win the finals will earn a four-week trip to Europe, where they will compete in further tournaments against the top juniors from around the world, and spend time with the Australian star, learning from him one-to-one.
Tennis fans have reacted to the move on X, praising the 25-year-old for his commitment to the next generation.
One fan was particularly impressed with the move.
“Alex! How Wonderful! I cannot think of a more fitting or deserving role model for the up and coming young champions out there. Sharing your knowledge and experience is an invaluable gift, that I know will be treasured,” they said.
One X user said: “Terrific initiative. Alex de Minaur giving back to Australian tennis.”
Another fan said that the announcement is just what you would expect from someone like De Minaur.
“Alex de Minaur junior tennis tour is just so fitting for him, love this guy,” they said.
Some fans were even more pleased with De Minaur’s plans.
“This is unreal. What an amazing opportunity for the young kids, Alex well done.”
“Everything you do honors both tennis and yourself, Alex. Australia is proud of you, and you deserve to be rightly proud of yourself, your achievements, and your attitude.”
It wasn’t just fans who were impressed by the move, as tennis legend Boris Becker also chimed in.
“Excellent initiative guys!” he said.
“Good luck in the process.”
Will Alex de Minaur qualify for the ATP Finals?
Whilst De Minaur is looking to provide support for the future of Australian tennis, he could well be on his way to achieving some pretty big success of his own.
The Australian is on the verge of qualifying for the ATP Finals in Turin for the first time in his career but could fall out of the qualification spots if things go against him this week.
| ATP Race ranking | Name | Points | Tournament |
| 6 | Novak Djokovic | 3910 | – |
| 7 | Casper Ruud | 3855 | Metz |
| 8 | Alex de Minaur | 3745 | Belgrade |
| 9 | Andrey Rublev | 3720 | Metz |
De Minaur is currently occupying the final qualification spot in eighth, but holds just a 25 point lead over Russian Andrey Rublev.
A title in Belgrade this week could see the Australian rise to as high as sixth in the race, but an early exit could see him fall out of the running, if results elsewhere go against him.
Ruud, De Minaur and Rublev’s efforts in Metz and Belgrade could all be for nothing as rumors of Novak Djokovic skipping the ATP Finals continue to circle.
The Serb skipping the tournament would grant all three a spot in Turin regardless of how things go this week.
De Minaur will return to court against the winner of Laslo Djere and Stan Wawrinka in Belgrade on Wednesday.
