Emma Raducanu is gearing up to don her national colours once again, as she aims to finish her season on a high note by representing Great Britain in the Billie Jean King Cup finals next week.
After enduring a tough stretch on the sidelines due to a ligament sprain in her left foot sustained at the Korea Open in September, the 21-year-old has made significant strides in her recovery. Having been absent from competitive play since that injury, Raducanu has been hard at work training at the LTA’s National Tennis Centre this week, and is poised to join the GB team as they set off for Malaga on Monday.
Her team provided an optimistic update, stating: ‘Emma is training well and being with the team next week is her focus.’
Raducanu, ranked No 58 in the world, had shown promising form before her injury. In her return to the tour in Seoul, she reached the quarter-finals, triumphing over Peyton Stearns and Yue Yuan. Unfortunately, an early medical timeout during her clash with eventual champion Daria Kasatkina limited her progress, prompting her withdrawal from the tournament.
The British star raised a few eyebrows when a photo emerged of her in a protective boot, leaving fans concerned for her condition.
Nevertheless, Raducanu proved instrumental in securing Britain’s qualification for the finals in Malaga. This past April, she made her long-awaited return to the national team after a two-year hiatus, delivering key victories against Caroline Garcia and Diane Parry and steering Britain to a solid 3-1 victory against France.
In the lead-up to the finals, Raducanu expressed her excitement in a statement, highlighting her ambition to represent her country effectively. The British No 2 aims to bring her best as the team eyes an enticing matchup against Germany on November 15. A successful win would pave the way for a clash with Canada in the quarter-finals, scheduled two days later.
With Katie Boulter ranked No 23 in the world leading the charge as captain Anne Keothavong’s top player, Raducanu (ranked 58th) is set to compete with world No 61 Harriet Dart for the coveted second singles spot.
All eyes will be on Raducanu as she seeks to reaffirm her place on the international stage, with hopes that this return marks the beginning of a new chapter in her career.
