Alexander Zverev says whether he believes he can catch Jannik Sinner and become world number one in 2025
Alexander Zverev has weighed in on whether he believes he can catch Jannik Sinner and rise to the top of the ATP rankings in 2025, setting his sights on the coveted world number one spot. After a series of setbacks due to injury and competition from a new generation of talent, Zverev is eager to reclaim his place among the tennis elite.
In a recent interview, Zverev expressed both confidence and a realistic view of the challenge ahead. He acknowledged that Jannik Sinner’s meteoric rise in 2024, which included multiple Grand Slam titles and the ATP World Tour Finals crown, has set a high bar. However, the German star, a former world number two, believes he has what it takes to compete at the highest level and challenge Sinner for the top ranking.
“Jannik has been incredible this past year, no doubt about it. He’s played some of the best tennis we’ve seen on the tour, but I believe I’m capable of reaching world number one,” Zverev stated. “I’ve been there at the top, close to it, and I know what it takes to compete with the best.”
Zverev’s journey to this point hasn’t been easy. After suffering a major ankle injury during the 2022 French Open, he endured a long recovery period that kept him out of the game for months. Although he made a strong return in 2023, he faced tough competition from a younger generation of stars, including Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, and Holger Rune.
Despite the challenges, Zverev remains optimistic about his chances. He highlighted the progress he’s made since returning from injury, including his performances in the latter half of the 2024 season, where he consistently reached the later stages of major tournaments.
“I feel like I’m playing some of my best tennis again, and I’m working hard to keep improving. The key will be consistency and staying healthy,” Zverev noted. “If I can put together a strong run at the big events, especially in the Grand Slams, I know I can challenge for the number one spot.”
Zverev’s belief in his ability to compete with Sinner comes from his experience on the tour and his past success. With 19 career titles, including the 2020 ATP Finals and multiple Masters 1000 victories, Zverev has proven he has the talent to go head-to-head with the best players in the world.
However, the German star is fully aware of the challenges that lie ahead, particularly with Sinner’s dominant form. “Jannik is not going to make it easy for anyone, but I like the challenge. It motivates me to push myself even harder. We’re all trying to be the best, and that’s what makes tennis exciting.”
As the 2025 season approaches, Zverev is focused on staying injury-free and building momentum early in the year. With the Australian Open just around the corner, he’s eager to test his form against the world’s best and begin his quest to catch Sinner and achieve his ultimate goal of becoming world number one.
