Elena Rybakina’s ‘concerning’ relationship with Stefano Vukov led to dire WTA monitoring tactics, exposes tennis insider
Elena Rybakina’s professional relationship with coach Stefano Vukov has recently come under scrutiny, leading to significant actions by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA). In August 2024, Rybakina parted ways with Vukov amid allegations of verbal mistreatment and psychological pressure. Russian journalist Sofya Tartakova reported that Rybakina’s parents urged this decision due to concerns over her mental well-being.
In January 2025, Rybakina rehired Vukov, a move that surprised many in the tennis community. Shortly thereafter, the WTA provisionally suspended Vukov, pending an investigation into potential breaches of its code of conduct. This suspension prevents him from obtaining credentials for WTA tournaments.
Rybakina has publicly defended Vukov, stating, “He never mistreated me or it was never anything like that.” She expressed dissatisfaction with the comments from others on the tour regarding their partnership.
Additionally, Rybakina had appointed Goran Ivanisevic, former coach of Novak Djokovic, to her team in late 2024. Ivanisevic has indicated that he will remain with Rybakina “for the moment,” pending the outcome of the WTA’s investigation into Vukov.
The situation has prompted discussions within the tennis community about coaching relationships and the measures in place to protect players’ well-being. The WTA has stated that it will not provide further details until the investigation is concluded.
