Iga Swiatek has avoided further complications in her doping case, as WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) has decided not to appeal the ITIA’s (International Tennis Integrity Agency) ruling, in contrast to Jannik Sinner’s case. Both Swiatek and Sinner tested positive for banned substances in 2024 and received no-fault verdicts from the ITIA. However, WADA later contested the ruling in Sinner’s case.

On Monday, January 20, WADA announced it would not challenge the ITIA’s decision regarding Swiatek’s doping case at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Swiatek had tested positive for trimetazidine (TMZ), a prohibited substance, in August 2024, but the ITIA concluded that her positive result stemmed from a “contaminated melatonin product.” Swiatek accepted a one-month suspension, which the ITIA deemed appropriate. After reviewing the case, WADA found her explanation of contamination “plausible” and determined that there was no scientific basis to pursue an appeal.

Meanwhile, WADA has taken a different approach in Jannik Sinner’s case, appealing the ITIA’s ruling and seeking a two-year ban. Sinner’s case will be heard by CAS in April 2025.

Swiatek has been unstoppable, winning all of her matches in straight sets and conceding only 11 games over four rounds. She began her campaign with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Katerina Siniakova in the first round, followed by a dominant 6-0, 6-2 win against Rebecca Sramkova in the second round. Swiatek then powered past Emma Raducanu 6-1, 6-0 in the third round, before demolishing lucky loser Eva Lys 6-0, 6-1 on Monday. The world No. 1 will now face eighth seed Emma Navarro in the quarterfinals.

Jannik Sinner has also been in stellar form, defeating Nicolas Jarry, Tristan Schoolkate, and Marcos Giron in his opening rounds. In the fourth round, Sinner overcame Holger Rune in a challenging match, winning 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Although Sinner appeared to struggle with some physical discomfort, the defending champion advanced and will next face either Alex de Minaur or Alex Michelsen in the quarterfinals.
