Novak Djokovic continues to defy expectations, proving that his career remains far from over. Despite being considered an underdog by many ahead of his 2025 Australian Open quarterfinal against Carlos Alcaraz, the 37-year-old Serbian showed his trademark resilience. Djokovic, who was dealing with a minor adductor injury, overcame Alcaraz in a hard-fought match to reach his 50th Grand Slam semifinal.

Although Alcaraz initially appeared in control of the match, Djokovic’s tactical brilliance began to shine through as the contest progressed. The world number 7 exploited Alcaraz’s weaknesses, ultimately turning the match in his favor.

In his post-match press conference, Djokovic acknowledged that his injury had affected his opponent’s focus, allowing him to capitalize on Alcaraz’s growing doubts. “I noticed that Carlos lost a bit of concentration due to my injury and I tried to use that situation to my advantage,” Djokovic said. “I tried to be more aggressive during rallies and took advantage of his doubts.”

Djokovic also revealed that he considered retiring after dropping the second set, but taking a painkiller helped him push through and improve as the match wore on. “I didn’t feel well in the second set, but the situation improved as the minutes went by,” he added. “He panicked and started thinking more about me than about himself.”

With a spot in the final on the line, Djokovic will now face Germany’s Alexander Zverev, who has been in impressive form this tournament after defeating Tommy Paul in the quarterfinals.
