Alex de Minaur was left feeling “slapped across the face” and deeply disappointed following his exit from the 2025 Australian Open after a heavy defeat to world No. 1 Jannik Sinner in the quarterfinals. The Australian player had high hopes of advancing further at his home Grand Slam, but Sinner’s dominant performance left him with little chance to compete on an even footing.

De Minaur, who has made steady progress over the past year, was gutted by the loss, which saw him swept aside in straight sets by the top-seeded Italian. Sinner’s relentless power and precision proved too much for the 24-year-old, who struggled to find his rhythm throughout the match.

Speaking in his post-match interview, de Minaur did not hold back on his disappointment, comparing the loss to a “slap across the face” after such a strong start to the tournament. “I felt like I was slapped across the face out there. Jannik just played an unbelievable match, and I couldn’t find a way to stop him,” de Minaur admitted. “It’s tough to take, especially here in Melbourne, where I really wanted to go deeper into the tournament.”

Despite the loss, de Minaur remained determined to use the experience as a learning opportunity, praising Sinner’s performance but also acknowledging his own shortcomings. “I’ve got to learn from this and work on what went wrong today. It’s disappointing, but it’s part of the process of getting better. Jannik was on another level today, and all credit to him,” he added.

De Minaur, who was looking to reach his first Grand Slam semifinal, will now turn his attention to upcoming tournaments as he aims to build on the progress he has made over the past year. Although the exit from the Australian Open was a bitter pill to swallow, the Australian star is determined to bounce back stronger.
