“Honestly, I didn’t see the replay”: Iga Swiatek shares view about double bounce incident during Australian Open quarterfinal clash
Poland’s tennis star Iga Swiatek addressed a controversial call during her Australian Open quarterfinal match against America’s Emma Navarro. Swiatek, who secured her place in the semifinals with a dominant 6-1, 6-2 victory, spoke about an incident in the second set where there was uncertainty over whether the ball had bounced twice before she returned it.
During the point, Navarro was unable to challenge the call as she had not stopped play. Swiatek, when questioned about it during the post-match press conference, stated that she was unsure of what happened as she was in full motion at the time.
“Honestly, I didn’t see the replay after this point because I didn’t look up at the screens. I wanted to stay focused and not let that point linger in my head,” Swiatek explained. “I wasn’t sure if it was a double bounce or if I hit it with my frame. I was sprinting and didn’t even see the contact point. But I trusted it was the umpire’s job to make the call.”
Swiatek mentioned that she briefly waited for the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system to weigh in, but when no review occurred, she chose to remain focused on the next point.
The 23-year-old, already a five-time Grand Slam winner, will now face Madison Keys of the USA in her quest for a first Australian Open final. Keys secured her place in the semifinals after a three-set win over Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina.
