Novak Djokovic addressed recent comments made by tennis legend John McEnroe, who had questioned the legitimacy of his injury during the 2025 Australian Open. McEnroe’s remarks stirred controversy when he suggested that Djokovic might have been “faking” the severity of his injury, which occurred during his quarterfinal match against Carlos Alcaraz. The injury ultimately forced Djokovic to retire in the semifinal against Alexander Zverev.

In response to McEnroe’s suggestion, Djokovic was calm yet firm during a post-match press conference. He acknowledged that he had not seen McEnroe’s comments but emphasized that it is easier to criticize from the outside than to truly understand an athlete’s situation.

The 10-time Australian Open champion made it clear that he did not harbor any resentment toward McEnroe but felt it was important to highlight the challenges athletes face when dealing with physical setbacks.

“I’ve given my all to this sport for many years, and injuries are part of the journey. Sometimes it’s not visible from the outside how much pain or struggle someone is going through. I respect John a lot, but I know what I went through out there,” Djokovic added.
