Australian tennis star Alex de Minaur is keeping things light-hearted with his fiancée Katie Boulter, revealing that their upcoming wedding is causing him some stress during the Australian Open. After his straight-sets victory over American Alex Michelsen, the world No. 8 joked about how the wedding budget has been on his mind while playing.

“When you see me so stressed out on court, it’s because I’m thinking about the wedding budget,” de Minaur told broadcaster Laura Robson after breaking through to the quarter-finals at Melbourne Park. “That’s why I’m like, ‘I need to win more matches, I need to win more money.’ Now you know what’s going on in my head.”

Despite the tough challenge ahead in his quarter-final match against world No. 1 Jannik Sinner, de Minaur’s recent successes will significantly boost his earnings. Even if he doesn’t win, his run so far will add $665,000 to his career prize money of over $25 million. If he manages to upset Sinner, a spot in the semi-finals would guarantee him a cool $1.1 million.

De Minaur and Boulter, who have been together since March 2020, confirmed their engagement in December 2024, but they have yet to set a wedding date. Reflecting on his form, de Minaur attributed his impressive performances to being happy off the court. “I don’t believe in coincidences. When you’re happy off the court, you play good tennis on the court,” he said.

Earlier in the tournament, Boulter jokingly told her fiancé to “stop thirst trapping” after de Minaur posted an Instagram photo showing off his toned arms.

As de Minaur prepares for his quarter-final clash against Sinner—an opponent he’s yet to beat or take a set off since 2020—the Aussie remains positive. “It’s going to be an incredibly tough match, but why not start something new here?” said de Minaur, who is the first local player to reach the Australian Open quarter-finals since Nick Kyrgios in 2015. He is also the first Australian to make four consecutive Grand Slam quarter-finals since Lleyton Hewitt reached the final in 2005.
