Aryna Sabalenka Criticized for Fiery Outburst After Australian Open Final Loss

Aryna Sabalenka faced heavy criticism for her emotional reaction after losing the Australian Open final to Madison Keys.

The defending champion was aiming to become the first woman since the 1990s to secure three consecutive singles titles in Melbourne and entered the final as the overwhelming favorite. However, Keys shocked the tennis world with a dramatic 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 victory, securing her first-ever Grand Slam title.

As Keys celebrated, television cameras captured Sabalenka’s raw frustration—she exchanged heated words with her coaching team before smashing her racket repeatedly on the court in anger.

Divided Opinions on Sabalenka’s Reaction

While Sabalenka quickly regained her composure and congratulated Keys on her victory, some felt the outburst was unnecessary. Former Grand Slam champion Rennae Stubbs argued that Sabalenka should have kept her emotions in check until she was off the court.

Speaking on the Rennae Stubbs Podcast, the Australian remarked:

“I think the reason why Sabalenka lost her mind after the match—which was not a good look—was that she thought the return was out [during the final game]. When you see her reaction to her box, she basically says she thought the return was out, which was why she lost her mind. But breaking the racket? That was really not a good look for her.”

Stubbs added that while Sabalenka is typically a gracious competitor, this was a moment she might regret:

“She is normally such a good loser, very gracious, and she was in her speech. But if there’s one moment she’d want to take back—it’s that. You can’t take that moment away from Madison.”

Andrea Petkovic Defends Sabalenka

However, not everyone agreed with Stubbs’ take. Former WTA star Andrea Petkovic came to Sabalenka’s defense, insisting that her passionate personality comes as a package deal.

“You live and die by the sword that you swing, and if we love Sabalenka for the emotions she displays, we have to accept the bad emotions as well,” Petkovic said. “We can’t love her for her funny dances and warrior spirit without embracing the other side of it too.”

A Tough Loss, But Sabalenka Still On Top

Despite the disappointment, Sabalenka still walked away with £1.5 million in prize money and further solidified her position at the top of the WTA rankings. She now holds a 200-point lead over World No. 2 Iga Swiatek.

While her on-court meltdown may have drawn criticism, Sabalenka remains one of the fiercest competitors on tour. The question now is: Will she use this loss as motivation to come back even stronger?
