Rybakina’s Struggles Continue as Sabalenka Shines in Miami

Elena Rybakina’s challenging 2025 season took another hit as the world No. 8 suffered an early exit at the Miami Open, while Aryna Sabalenka made an emphatic start to her campaign.

A two-time finalist in Miami, Rybakina had previously enjoyed deep runs at the tournament. However, this year, she experienced her earliest-ever exit, falling in her opening match to world No. 40 Ashlyn Krueger in a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 upset. Despite a strong second set, the Kazakh struggled to maintain momentum, conceding a crucial break in both the first and third sets, which ultimately sealed her fate.

Rybakina’s 2025 season has been inconsistent, with two semifinal appearances and a quarterfinal run, but her struggles against top opponents have been evident. Following her 6-1, 6-2 defeat to Mirra Andreeva in the Indian Wells round of 16, she failed to rebound in Miami, marking another disappointing result.

Meanwhile, Krueger advances to the third round, where she will face Leylah Fernandez.

Sabalenka Dominates in Miami Opener

In contrast to Rybakina’s early exit, top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka showed no signs of trouble in her first match of the tournament. After receiving a first-round bye, the world No. 1 delivered a commanding 6-3, 6-0 victory over Viktoriya Tomova.

Sabalenka initially led 5-1 in the first set before a slight stumble allowed Tomova to close the gap to 5-3. However, the Belarusian quickly regained control, winning seven consecutive games to close out the match in dominant fashion.

Addressing the crowd after her victory, Sabalenka expressed her surprise at the strong turnout: “Thank you guys for coming. Honestly, I didn’t expect so many people watching. I feel so sorry for those who were sitting in the sun.”

Next, Sabalenka will take on Elena-Gabriela Ruse as she continues her quest for the Miami Open title.
