It started with a fruit salad. Now it’s a full-blown smoothie movement.
At the 2023 US Open, Coco Gauff turned heads—not just with her game, but with her snack game. Cameras caught her casually enjoying a fruit salad during a changeover, adding a refreshing twist to high-pressure moments. Fast forward to June 2024, and that love for fruit turned official: Gauff became Naked Smoothies’ first-ever Chief Smoothie Officer.
Now, the partnership is blending sports, humor, and health in the most entertaining way—with the introduction of Gauff’s new courtside companion: the “smoothie boy.”
From Ball Boys to Smoothie Boys
In a clever twist on tennis tradition, Naked Smoothies’ latest ad features Gauff questioning her surprise new sidekick:
“I was recently named Naked’s Chief Smoothie Officer. But I didn’t know the position came with a…smoothie boy?”
Meet Cliff Schutt, the dedicated smoothie-toting counterpart to the classic ball boy. His job? Deliver Gauff her favorite blends—like mango and pineapple—mid-match. In one scene, he sprints across the court to hand over a bottle. In another, he hovers by her chair, always ready, always stocked. Gauff’s initial confusion quickly turns to amusement:
“It took a little while getting used to. But it’s really grown on me.”
A Perfect Pairing
Known for her sweet tooth, Gauff has long been a smoothie fan. “A lot of times when I want to satisfy that sweet tooth without eating actual dessert, I’ll eat fruit,” she said. So a brand that bottles up real fruit and veggies was a natural fit.
CEO Glen Walter agrees:
“Coco is a true multi-hyphenate—athlete, advocate, daughter, friend—and now, Chief Smoothie Officer. She knows you can be many things at once.”
In a February Instagram reel titled “Quick sips, quick win”, Gauff humorously tried blending smoothies on court, even offering one to the chair umpire. (Spoiler: he declined.)
Why Naked?
Gauff revealed in an interview with Entrepreneur that she’s not big on breakfast. Smoothies help fuel her mornings, especially before matches.
“My routine depends on match timing, but smoothies are consistent. It’s the perfect light, nutritious option,” she explained.
That makes her partnership with Naked Smoothies more than a branding gimmick—it’s a lifestyle match.
Could the Smoothie Boy Go Pro?
While the “smoothie boy” concept is currently just a fun campaign, fans are loving it. Some are even asking if it could catch on in other sports.
Naked Smoothie seems to think so. “Who has time for blending these days?” the brand joked online.
As Gauff prepares for her next tournament in Stuttgart, the only question left is: Can a smoothie-fueled star go all the way? Time will tell
