Alexander Zverev shares candid thoughts after hard-fought win against Griekspoor: ‘I need to get one of these’
World No. 3 Alexander Zverev is through to the Munich Open semifinals after surviving a tense, three-hour battle with Dutch opponent Tallon Griekspoor. The German edged out a 2-1 victory in a match packed with drama and resilience.
Zverev now sets his sights on Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan, aiming for a third Munich title. Speaking post-match, he expressed relief at finally getting the better of a tight encounter.
“I’m extremely happy. Finally, I won a close one,” said Zverev. “I’ve lost a few of those in recent months, and I kept telling myself, ‘I need to get one of these.’ Today, I did.”
Despite being pushed to the brink—including saving a match point in the second set and clawing back from 0/40 in the third—Zverev kept his composure.
“I’m proud of how I hung in there, especially in that third set. That’s the kind of fight I needed,” he added.
Zverev on His Rivalry With Griekspoor
The German acknowledged the unpredictability of matches with Griekspoor, recalling their roller-coaster clash at Indian Wells.
“Tallon and I always have these wild matches,” Zverev noted. “At Indian Wells, I served for it and got broken, then he served for it and got broken. With us, anything can happen.”
Controversy: Fan Heckles Zverev
Late in the second set, Zverev was the target of an offensive shout from a fan who yelled, “Let’s go, you … wife-beater!” Zverev immediately appealed to the chair umpire for action.
“Fergus, please kick him out,” he said firmly.
Despite the ugly moment, Zverev refocused and closed out the match.
“It was a roller-coaster,” he said, “but I don’t even care—I won.”
