During his quarterfinal match at the Munich Open, Alexander Zverev faced an uncomfortable and tense moment when a spectator heckled him with a highly personal and offensive comment.

The incident occurred late in the second set, with the score tied at 5-5 in the German star’s match against Tallon Griekspoor. From the stands, an individual shouted, “Let’s go, you [expletive] wife-beater!” — a comment that was made in German and clearly heard by those in attendance.

Zverev, ranked No. 3 in the world, kept his composure and did not react publicly during the moment. However, after the game concluded, he approached chair umpire Fergus Murphy to address the situation.

“Fergus, Fergus, please kick him out. I don’t want to repeat it. It’s the same guy who did the same thing before my second serve once,” Zverev told the umpire.

Background Context

The incident touches on a sensitive chapter in Zverev’s personal life. He was previously accused of physical abuse by Brenda Patea, the mother of his child. The case concluded with a court settlement, and no conviction was recorded.

Zverev Rallies to Victory

Despite the disturbance and pressure, Zverev managed to regain focus and come back from a set down, eventually winning the match 6-7 (6), 7-6 (3), 6-4.

“I’m extremely happy. Finally, I won a close one. I’ve lost a few of those in the past few months and I always said, ‘I need to get one of these’. I did today. I’m extremely happy with how I hung in there, especially in the third set, being 0/40 down in my second service game. I’m proud to win this match and looking forward to the next two, hopefully,” Zverev said in his post-match comments.

He will next face Fabian Marozsan for a spot in the Munich final.
