Holger Rune is back in top form, reaching his 11th ATP final at the 2025 Barcelona Open. The 21-year-old Dane has been on a tear this week, defeating top names and now setting up a much-anticipated final clash against fellow young star Carlos Alcaraz.
After battling through months of injuries and inconsistency, Rune seems to have rediscovered his groove. His impressive run included a dominant win over Casper Ruud, followed by a clinical 6-3, 6-2 victory against Karen Khachanov in the semifinals.
That win marked Rune’s second final appearance of the season, following his strong performance at Indian Wells. Now back inside the ATP top 10, the Danish star is eyeing more than just rankings—he’s chasing titles and building momentum for an even bigger season.
Rune’s Semi-Final Masterclass
Against Khachanov, Rune put on a clinic. He needed just 67 minutes to dismantle the Russian, firing 21 winners and keeping his unforced errors to just 13. Rune didn’t face a single break point, while breaking Khachanov’s serve four times—including three consecutive breaks.
The turning point came late in the first set when Rune broke at love with a backhand winner and then sealed the set 6-3 after a well-placed drop shot and a Khachanov error. In the second set, Rune raced to a 3-0 lead with a forehand winner and never looked back. He wrapped up the match with a backhand crosscourt winner, setting the stage for a showdown with Alcaraz.
Rune Reflects on His Performance
Following the match, Rune shared his thoughts:
“I played a great match against Karen. I’ve shown again that I can make smart tactical choices—mixing up styles, using the drop shot, and returning well. I’m serving at a high level too, and that gives me confidence to get back to my best.”
“After reaching the Indian Wells final, I truly believe again in my ability to win big. I’m back in the top 10, which shows I’ve improved, and it’s pushing me to keep working and dreaming even bigger.”
With his game firing on all cylinders, Holger Rune now prepares to face Carlos Alcaraz in what promises to be an electrifying Barcelona Open final.
