Coco Gauff Gives Fans a Laugh After a Golf Mishap in Madrid
2024 wasn’t the dream season Coco Gauff fans envisioned. With a 14-6 record and no titles from six tournaments in the first three months of the year, the American star is still chasing her first win of 2025. Despite her underwhelming run, Gauff remains determined, telling ESPN, “I’m going to keep doing what I’m doing, and I’m going to keep working hard.”
That said, she might want to sharpen more than just her tennis skills.
While in Madrid preparing for the upcoming Open, Gauff shared a light-hearted moment on Instagram that had fans laughing. In a short video, she attempted to hit a golf ball near a lakeside spot—only for it to land splash right in the water. Her caption? Simply: “epic fall 🤣”
It’s not her first golf gag. Back in September 2023, she posted a Drive Shack clip where a friend jokingly teased her golfing struggles with, “That’s a tennis champ right there,” before offering the classic golf tip: “Keep your head down.” Gauff eventually made contact—and dubbed herself with the witty label: “Gauff but can’t Golf.”
Balancing Fun and Focus
Gauff has always believed in balancing intensity with downtime. After her 2024 ASB Classic title, she celebrated with a mini-golf night at Melbourne’s Holey Moley. As she once said, “There’s never two weeks I’m practicing at home where I’m not doing something with my friends in between… mini-golf, escape rooms, movies, bowling.”
Despite her fun-loving nature, Gauff’s season has hit a few bumps. She started strong, leading Team USA to United Cup victory and reaching the Australian Open quarterfinals. But her form dipped during the Middle East and Sunshine Double swings. Her recent QF exit in Stuttgart mirrored her 2024 result—fueling talk of a mid-season slump.
Madrid Open: Tough Draw Ahead
Now 21, Gauff shifts her focus to the Madrid Open—an event where she reached the fourth round in 2024. This year’s draw isn’t doing her any favors. She received a first-round bye but could face Dayana Yastremska or a qualifier next. A third-round clash with Canadian Leylah Fernandez could follow—no easy feat, given Fernandez’s grit on big stages.
Things escalate in the fourth round, with potential matchups against either Clara Tauson or Belinda Bencic, both in solid form this season. The quarterfinals might pit her against rising star Mirra Andreeva, who has already claimed titles in Dubai and Indian Wells.
If Gauff navigates that gauntlet, she could face defending champ Iga Swiatek in the semifinals—a rivalry Gauff trails 3-11, though she’s won their last two meetings. And should she reach the final, top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka could be waiting.
Is Gauff’s Slump Just a Bump?
As Coco gears up for a tough road ahead in Madrid, the question lingers: Is her mid-season dip a temporary setback or something more?
Let us know what you think.
