Jannik Sinner Opens Up Ahead of Italian Open Return After Suspension

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner has admitted to feeling uncertain about his current form as he prepares to return to action at the Italian Open in Rome following a three-month suspension for a doping violation.

The 22-year-old Italian, who hasn’t competed since winning the Australian Open in January, reenters the spotlight with what he calls “very, very low expectations.” Sinner is set to face either Mariano Navone or Italian wildcard Federico Cina after receiving a first-round bye.

Speaking during a packed press conference, Sinner expressed both humility and hope:

“It’s a low-expectation tournament for me. I don’t know where my level is — that will come back gradually. The main goal is Paris. I’m not here to beat anyone, just to get through the first round and see what happens.”

Sinner revealed that the suspension period, agreed upon with the World Anti-Doping Agency, was mentally draining. He even avoided sports entirely — including live events — for a month and didn’t touch a tennis racket.

“It wasn’t easy to accept because I know what really happened. But sometimes you have to make the best decision in a bad moment.”

While working to regain his competitive edge, Sinner also addressed rumors about his personal life. Though he had previously been linked to WTA star Anna Kalinskaya, he confirmed he’s currently single. He smiled when asked about recent photos with model Lara Leito, saying:

“I saw the pictures — nothing serious! I’m not in a relationship. All good!”

As he makes his comeback in front of a home crowd, Sinner is focused on building momentum ahead of Roland Garros, where he hopes to capture a third straight Grand Slam title.
