Emma Raducanu is showing signs of crucial improvement on clay, with former Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli highlighting her enhanced movement and strength as key factors in her recent progress.

Following a second-round exit in Madrid, the 22-year-old British star advanced to the third round of the Italian Open with a dominant 6-2, 6-2 victory over Jil Teichmann. It marks just the second time Raducanu has reached the round of 32 at a WTA 1000 clay-court event.

Although still relatively inexperienced on clay—this is only her fifth main-draw appearance in Madrid-Rome—Raducanu’s improved mobility hasn’t gone unnoticed.

“I think she’s moving better, which is crucial on clay,” Bartoli told Sky Sports Tennis. “You’re sliding everywhere on this surface, so your legs need to be incredibly strong. She’s clearly done the work in the gym.”

Bartoli credited Raducanu’s post-Miami break as a smart decision, giving her time to build strength in preparation for the clay and grass seasons.

Currently, Raducanu is working with Mark Petchey in a part-time coaching arrangement. Petchey, who previously coached Andy Murray, is limited in availability due to his broadcasting commitments. Long-time mentor Jane Donoghue is also part of her team in Rome.

Bartoli believes Raducanu benefits from a non-technical, tactical coaching style. “She’s probably looking for someone who can break down an opponent’s game plan rather than focus too much on mechanics,” she said. “Mark’s experience allows him to make quick tactical adjustments, which can really ease a player’s stress mid-match.”

The French former pro also noted Raducanu’s increased trust in her coaching box, often making eye contact during matches. “That kind of communication shows she believes in her team,” Bartoli added.
