Coco Gauff and Emma Raducanu face off this afternoon in a high-stakes last-16 showdown at the Italian Open in Rome.
This is only the second WTA Tour meeting between two of tennis’s brightest young stars. Gauff won their previous encounter in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6, during the second round of the 2023 Australian Open.
Since then, Gauff has continued her rise, capturing her first Grand Slam title at the 2023 US Open and climbing to No. 3 in the world rankings. Raducanu, meanwhile, has battled injuries and coaching changes since her own breakthrough US Open win in 2021. She currently sits just inside the WTA top 50.
Still, Raducanu has found form in Rome, defeating Maya Joint, Jil Teichmann, and Veronika Kudermetova—overcoming a set deficit in the latter—to reach the fourth round.
Gauff, seeded fourth in Rome, had a first-round bye and has since beaten Victoria Mboko and Magda Linette, showing strong clay-court form after a runner-up finish to Aryna Sabalenka at the Madrid Open.
