Toni Nadal, the veteran coach and uncle of Rafael Nadal, has pinpointed a key issue he believes is preventing Alexander Zverev from securing a Grand Slam title. Following Zverev’s shocking first-round exit at Wimbledon 2025 to Arthur Rinderknech on July 1, where the German opened up about his mental struggles, Toni has suggested that the 28-year-old’s primary challenge lies in his mentality. Having observed Zverev training at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca, Toni remarked that while Zverev possesses the physical and technical tools—evidenced by his past performances against Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer—he needs to adjust his mindset to break through. “If he wants to win and have chances to win a Grand Slam, he needs to change a little his mentality,” Toni stated, emphasizing that this shift is crucial despite his affection for the player.

Zverev’s recent candid admission of feeling “very alone” and lacking joy, coupled with his three lost Grand Slam finals, supports Toni’s assessment. The coach’s involvement, sparked by Zverev’s post-Wimbledon training sessions, suggests a potential mentorship to address this mental block, drawing on Toni’s success in guiding Rafael to 16 of his 22 Grand Slam titles. This perspective aligns with Zverev’s current efforts to regroup, though whether this mental adjustment will translate to a first major title remains to be seen as he prepares for the North American hard-court season.
