Boris Becker makes feelings known on Alexander Zverev reportedly joining forces with Rafael Nadal’s uncle Toni after Wimbledon heartbreak
Boris Becker has expressed enthusiasm about the potential coaching alliance between Alexander Zverev and Toni Nadal following Zverev’s disappointing first-round exit at Wimbledon 2025. After losing to Arthur Rinderknech on July 1, the German star, ranked world No. 3, openly discussed his mental struggles and hinted at seeking change, later withdrawing from the Swiss Open Gstaad. Reports suggest Zverev has been training at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca with Toni Nadal, Rafael Nadal’s uncle and former coach, sparking speculation of a new partnership.
On his podcast with Andrea Petkovic, Becker endorsed the move, stating, “If it’s true that Toni Nadal is Sascha Zverev’s new coach, he’s done everything right.” He highlighted Toni’s track record, noting his role in Rafael Nadal’s 22 Grand Slam titles and the academy’s resources, which offer training on multiple surfaces. Becker believes this could be the key to Zverev’s elusive first major, especially on clay, where Zverev seeks success. He also suggested Rafael might serve as a mentor, adding, “This combination is totally exciting.”
Becker’s support contrasts with his earlier criticism of Zverev’s reliance on his father and brother, advocating for a fresh coaching perspective after the French Open. Zverev’s response to that critique had been sharp, but this potential shift aligns with Becker’s advice. While no official confirmation exists, Becker sees Toni’s disciplined approach—emphasizing punctuality and respect—as a potential game-changer for Zverev’s career, especially as he targets a return at the Canadian Open on July 26.
