Carlos Alcaraz has received a bold warning from top coach Rick Macci ahead of his anticipated US Open battle with Jannik Sinner, urging him to make strategic adjustments to reclaim his edge. As the 22-year-old Spaniard, currently ranked world No. 2, prepares for the North American hard-court swing, Macci emphasized the need for Alcaraz to enhance his center-court control and play more aggressively. Having skipped the Canadian Open to recover from minor muscle issues following his Wimbledon final loss to Sinner on July 13, 2025, Alcaraz is focusing on training for the Cincinnati Masters and the US Open, starting August 24. Macci, known for coaching Serena Williams and Andy Roddick, advised Alcaraz to “deal the cards on the rise” and play “with his eyes,” suggesting he should move closer to the baseline to dictate play rather than relying on his defensive speed, which Macci likened to running “track.”

This warning comes after a stellar 2025 season where Alcaraz won five titles, including the French Open, but saw his 24-match win streak snapped by Sinner in a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 Wimbledon defeat. Macci’s advice highlights a perceived vulnerability on hard courts, where Alcaraz must counter Sinner’s consistency—evidenced by the Italian’s four Grand Slam titles and current No. 1 ranking. The coach also stressed the importance of “microscopic mental aggressive beliefs on big points,” a critical factor as Alcaraz aims to regain the top spot, defending only 60 points at the US Open compared to Sinner’s 3,200. With their rivalry intensifying—Sinner now leads their head-to-head 6-5 after five straight losses to Alcaraz—Macci’s bold call suggests a pivotal moment for Alcaraz to adapt his game ahead of their next clash.
