Laura Turner has warned that players could soon start walking off stage if relentless crowd whistling continues to spiral out of control.

Night Six of the Premier League Darts in Nottingham was overshadowed by disruptive noise, with fans seemingly trying to put players off at crucial moments.

Earlier this month, referee Huw Ware was forced to stop play and order spectators to “shut up” after piercing whistles disrupted Stephen Bunting’s clash with Niko Springer at the European Darts Trophy in Göttingen.

Speaking on the Love the Darts Podcast, Turner admitted the issue is becoming increasingly difficult to control and fears it could push players to their limit.

“It’s really tough,” she said. “You just hope the people sitting around those causing it can appeal to their better nature, because ultimately, everyone has paid money to be there.

“You go to watch the best players in the world, but if you spend the whole time booing and whistling, you’re stopping them from performing at their best.

“It’s something we see a lot on the Euro Tour now, and it’s even started creeping into some of the bigger competitions. As a fan, a pundit, and someone who’s played in big arenas, it’s horrible.

“You don’t want that at all. It’s starting to feel like part of the game, but I really hope it doesn’t become that.

“It could get to the point where players decide they’ve had enough and simply walk off stage.

“You’ve got referees like Huw Ware stepping in now, making it clear it’s not acceptable. Even MC Philip Brezinski addressed it when Stephen Bunting was getting a lot of stick that weekend.

“It’s being talked about more, and people are trying to stamp it out — but it’s not easy.”
