Cameron Menzies breaks silence after fainting during World Matchplay Darts with match abandoned in worrying scenes

Cameron Menzies has reassured fans that he is recovering well after collapsing during his Betfred World Matchplay second-round clash with Ross Smith at the Winter Gardens.

The 37-year-old Scot suddenly became unsteady as he prepared to throw in the early stages of the match, prompting concern from everyone inside the venue. Menzies, who had earned a confidence-boosting first-round victory over world No. 1 Luke Humphries, was immediately assisted by Smith and tournament officials before being helped off the stage for medical treatment.

The match was subsequently abandoned due to the incident.

Breaking his silence on social media, Menzies thanked supporters for their concern, writing: “Thanks to everyone who’s checked in and sent messages. I’m okay.”

The Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) later confirmed that Menzies had been assessed by medical staff and was well enough to return to his accommodation.

In an official statement, the PDC explained that Menzies experienced high blood pressure, which caused dizziness and ultimately led to him fainting during the match.

The statement added: “Following an assessment by the on-site medical team, Cameron was deemed well enough to return to his accommodation. We wish Cameron all the best and look forward to seeing him back in action soon.”

Broadcast coverage immediately switched away from the stage as medical personnel attended to Menzies. Sky Sports presenter Emma Paton updated viewers, saying that the Scot was receiving treatment from St John Ambulance medics and expressing hope that he would make a swift recovery.

Earlier in the evening, Menzies had appeared in light-hearted social media content for the PDC, recreating his famous 170 “Big Fish” checkouts before taking to the stage.

With Menzies unable to continue, Ross Smith was awarded a bye into the quarter-finals, where he will now face Gerwyn Price.
