With all the title aspirations he’s named for the first time so clearly at Wimbledon, the fourth-ranked tennis player in the world nevertheless enjoys golfing. He ordered a golf set with nine holes and plastic balls on the internet as soon as he arrived at the house rented for Wimbledon.
“I’m just a little kid”
“I do it every day. I play against my physio, who gets really annoyed when he loses. I love seeing that”, described the 27-year-old Hamburg native. “Off the tennis court, I’m just a little kid”, he added. “I play games. I can’t sit still. I play Mario Kart with my friends.”
Like many pros, Zverev has rented a house for the third Grand Slam tournament of the year. His brother Mischa Zverev’s family, including his two little kids, are also there. They’ve even ordered a mini tennis net, Zverev reported.
Zverev’s title quest begins on Tuesday
If the seriousness of the first-round matches at the London grass classic begins today, the German number one can still go to the training court. Zverev’s first-round test against the Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena is only on Tuesday. Zverev wants to present himself as ripe for grass tennis at Wimbledon as he apparently hasn’t felt in the past years.
As clear as never before, Zverev brought out his goals. “This is the first time I really think I’m a contender to win the title here”, said the French Open finalist. He thinks this might be the most open Wimbledon edition in the last 20 years.
To enhance his title chances, he wants to change his approach to grass tennis, which is characterized by a serve-dominated game with several short rallies. “You have to like the grass court somewhere. I didn’t like it”, Zverev said. “You have to accept that the game might not be as beautiful as on other surfaces”, so Zverev.
