The introduction of “coaching pods” at the 2025 Australian Open has continued to spark conversation, especially after a surprising courtside interaction between Novak Djokovic and his new coach, Andy Murray. The two tennis legends, who have spent years as rivals on the court, now find themselves working together in a move that has left many fans in disbelief.

Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam champion and 10-time Australian Open victor, faced an unexpected challenge in his first-round match against 19-year-old Nishesh Basavareddy. Although Djokovic ultimately won in four sets, he took full advantage of the new rule allowing on-court coaching, engaging in a conversation with Murray during the match.

The use of coaching pods, a new feature at the Australian Open, permits coaches to sit courtside in a designated area that includes seats for four members of the player’s support team and screens for live statistical analysis. Coaches can now communicate with players verbally or through hand signals, except during live points. This new system has been polarizing, with some players, like Alexander Zverev, voicing their dislike for it, while others, such as Djokovic, have embraced it.

The sight of Djokovic and Murray chatting between sets left fans stunned. Scott Barclay, an Andy Murray fan and podcast host, tweeted, “Alright, seeing Novak Djokovic just casually chatting with Andy Murray as his coach courtside between sets is absolutely insane to see. What reality are we all living in where this has happened?!” Canadian tennis insider Stephen Boughton echoed this sentiment, remarking, “What world am I living in? Andy Murray is coaching Novak Djokovic… 2010 me would never believe this.”

While many fans were intrigued by the dynamic between Djokovic and Murray, some commentators expressed frustration over the lack of insight into their conversations. Catherine Whitaker of The Tennis Podcast voiced her displeasure, saying, “I found it absolutely maddening that we couldn’t hear the exchanges between them… Looked like they were having a really in-depth chat about tactics and strategy, and I couldn’t hear a single word of it.”

Despite the initial awkwardness between Djokovic and Murray, as they adjusted to their new roles, the relationship appeared to improve as the match progressed. Djokovic praised Murray in the post-match press conference, saying, “It was a bit of a strange experience to have him courtside in my box… He gave me great advice mid-match. It’s important. I enjoy talking to Andy. He knows tennis as well as anybody out there.”

Djokovic now moves on to face Portuguese qualifier Jaime Faria as he continues his pursuit of a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title. Should he succeed, he would become the third man in the Open Era to reach 100 career titles, joining the ranks of Jimmy Connors and Roger Federer.
