Luke Littler’s walk-on for his Premier League quarter-final against Stephen Bunting in Exeter was marred by an incident involving an overzealous fan.
As Littler made his way through the packed crowd, signing autographs and greeting fans, one individual pushed past his mother, who was waiting to embrace her son. This intrusion visibly angered Littler, who promptly cleared the space to ensure his mother’s safety.
Footage captured his frustration as he made sure his mother was unharmed before stepping onto the stage. Throughout the match, Littler occasionally glanced at his mother, giving her a thumbs-up to reassure her. Despite the distraction, Littler delivered a stellar performance, averaging 112 in a 6-3 victory over Bunting, setting up a semi-final clash with Nathan Aspinall.
The incident highlights the challenge of managing enthusiastic crowds in the Premier League. Night two in Glasgow saw widespread criticism of fans whistling during matches, including the final between Littler and Luke Humphries.
While acknowledging the occasional issues, Littler maintains that the crowd’s energy is a positive aspect of the events. The PDC, however, has issued a strong statement against disruptive behavior. “Following Thursday’s Premier League Darts night in Glasgow, the PDC wishes to strongly reiterate that it does not condone any behaviour which can disrupt an event, such as whistling or booing when players are throwing,” they stated. They also warned that disruptive individuals could be removed from venues.
Despite the incident, Littler’s composure and performance have earned him widespread praise. He continues to be a role model, handling the pressure with remarkable maturity. Littler now aims to close the gap on Humphries, who currently leads the Premier League table.
