Alex De Minaur was willing to sacrifice title victory before Queen’s Club upset

Alex De Minaur was upset by Lorenzo Musetti in his opening match at the Queen’s Club on Tuesday. He reached the final 12 months ago and came in off the back of winning his ninth career title in ‘s-Hertogenbosch.

But the No. 2 seed fell at the first hurdle at the cinch Championships as Musetti beat him 1-6 6-4 6-2.

After the match, De Minaur confessed that he would have sacrificed his latest trophy to do better at Queen’s.

“I would’ve much rather gone deep here,” the Australian said after coming off court. “It is a long time til Wimby starts so again, I probably would’ve taken a not-so-good result in ‘s-Hertogenbosch and go deep here.”

Explaining why Queen’s was more of a priority for him, he continued: “It’s a bigger tournament, it’s closer to Wimby so you don’t have that much time to dwell or think about it. But I’ve been dealt this hand and I’ve got to deal with it and I’ll have enough prep, I’ll be ready to go and I’ll be looking forward to it.”

But the 25-year-old was still able to maintain perspective in the heat of defeat. “It’s a tennis match. I lost, sometimes it happens. If it didn’t happen then tennis would be a very easy sport where you win every match you play,” he admitted
