Zverev Struggles Continue with Miami Open Exit

Alexander Zverev’s struggles at the Miami Open persist, as the world No. 2 fell in the round of 16.

The German has now competed in six tournaments in 2025, starting with the Australian Open, where he suffered a tough final loss to world No. 1 Jannik Sinner. That defeat, according to Zverev, has lingered in his performances since.

Following his Melbourne setback, Zverev has endured quarter-final exits at the Argentina Open and Rio Open, along with earlier losses at the Mexican Open (round of 16) and Indian Wells (second round). His latest disappointment came in Miami, where top-seeded Zverev was defeated 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 by Arthur Fils.

Zverev Frustrated by Losses from Winning Positions

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Zverev reflected on his struggles to close out matches.

“I have been losing a lot of matches where I feel like I am in control lately,” he admitted. “It happened again today, so I have to look at myself more than anything else.”

Despite showing signs of improvement in Miami compared to previous weeks, Zverev was frustrated by his inability to capitalize on a strong position.

“I was up a break in the third, and there’s no reason for me to lose that match—but then I lose four games in a row,” he said.

The German detailed similar collapses in recent tournaments.

“In Indian Wells, I was serving for the match. In Rio, I was up 4-1 in the third set. In Buenos Aires, I led by a set and a break. I’m losing too many matches from winning positions, and I need to change that.”

Zverev, a three-time Grand Slam finalist, was particularly disappointed by his Australian Open loss. However, he has since had a golden opportunity to capitalize on Sinner’s three-month suspension. Instead, his inability to progress deep in tournaments has left him trailing far behind in the ATP rankings.

ATP Rankings – Top 3

1️⃣ Jannik Sinner (23) – 11,330 points
2️⃣ Alexander Zverev (27) – 7,945 points
3️⃣ Carlos Alcaraz (21) – 6,910 points

Despite Sinner’s absence, Zverev remains a distant second, failing to close the gap. When asked what’s causing his repeated struggles, he admitted he doesn’t have an answer yet.

“I don’t know right now,” he said. “I will have a conversation with the people around me, but right now, I’m not sure.”

Zverev will now look to regroup as he aims to turn his season around and find consistency in closing out matches.
