Alexander Zverev believes Jannik Sinner will still be the man to beat upon his return from suspension
Despite serving a three-month ban after testing positive for a banned substance, Jannik Sinner is expected to return in top form, according to Alexander Zverev.
Sinner, who was suspended after testing positive for Clostebol, a prohibited substance, started the season on a high note by winning the Australian Open. He began his suspension in February and is set to return just in time for the 2025 Rome Open, with his eyes set on a strong comeback at Roland Garros.
Zverev’s Take on Sinner’s Return
Zverev, currently the World No.2, is competing at the Monte-Carlo Masters and recently faced Sinner in the final of the 2025 Australian Open, where Sinner triumphed in straight sets. Speaking in a press conference, Zverev shared his thoughts on whether Sinner will be able to regain his form quickly after his break.
“Stronger than before, I think it’s impossible,” said Zverev. “He started the season the same way he ended it, as World No.1. A three-month break, and not due to injury, is not a lot of time. He’s had the chance to recharge, and he’s been able to train intensively, fine-tuning his shots and movements. I don’t think it will take long for him to return to the level he showed in Melbourne.”
Zverev’s Struggles Post-Melbourne
Zverev also opened up about his own challenges after his loss to Sinner in Melbourne, revealing that it took a toll on him during the Latin American swing.
“It was very hard after Melbourne,” confessed Zverev. “I went to play in Latin America, but I carried that disappointment with me. And I was fatigued. I would have liked to rest, but business is business. Tennis is my job, and those events had been scheduled long ago. The fans and locations were amazing, but sometimes, you just feel better at home.”
