Alexander Zverev is hopeful of turning his season around, drawing inspiration from Carlos Alcaraz’s resurgence after a rocky start to the year. The German star, currently ranked world No. 3, is competing at the ATP 500 event in Munich this week following a series of disappointing results.
Alcaraz, who endured early exits in Indian Wells and Miami, rebounded by capturing the Monte Carlo Masters title on Sunday—his 18th career title. Zverev, who lost in the first round in Monte Carlo to Matteo Berrettini, is now aiming to follow suit.
“Alcaraz reaching the final and winning Monte Carlo is a big step for him,” Zverev said. “At the start of the year, you know who your rivals are. We’ve all been struggling since Australia, but I think Carlos has come through it—and I believe I will too.”
Since reaching the Australian Open final in January, Zverev has gone 6-6 in matches and failed to move past the quarterfinals in any tournament. However, the two-time Munich champion remains confident that a breakthrough is near.
“I feel like I’m playing better and better. I just need to win one or two close matches,” he explained. “I still believe in myself. I haven’t forgotten how to play at a high level, and I think I’ll be in top form when Paris comes around. That’s still my main focus.”
Zverev is eyeing redemption at the French Open after losing last year’s final to Alcaraz in a five-set battle. But first, he hopes to build momentum on home soil in Munich.
“Of course, the last few weeks haven’t gone my way. I’ve lost to players I should’ve beaten. But I’m still confident. The big stage is where I want to shine—and I’m ready to get back to winning.”
