Alexander Zverev Reflects on Australian Open Loss, Adjusts Harsh Self-Criticism
Alexander Zverev has softened his harsh self-assessment following his defeat in the Australian Open final to Jannik Sinner. The world No. 2 initially expressed deep disappointment in his performance, but now acknowledges that he may have been too hard on himself.
Zverev’s Australian Open Heartbreak
The German remains in search of his first Grand Slam title, having now lost in three major finals. His latest attempt ended in a one-sided 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-3 loss to Sinner, marking his most lopsided defeat on the big stage.
After the match, Zverev bluntly admitted:
“Today was nowhere near good enough. Jannik is better than me at the moment. It’s as simple as that.”
“I think I served better than Jannik, and everything else he does better. He’s the best player on hard courts right now.”
A Change in Perspective
Now back on the court at the Argentina Open, where he is the top seed, Zverev has taken a step back to reconsider his words.
“After losing that kind of final, a lot of emotions go through your head. And sometimes I say things that I regret,” he admitted.
“I kind of regret saying that maybe I’m not good enough. I have to keep believing in myself and believe that I am good enough to win Grand Slams and become world No. 1 if I keep improving.”
While he stands by the fact that his Australian Open final performance was not up to standard, he acknowledges that previous Slam losses—such as his 2020 US Open collapse against Dominic Thiem—were far more painful.
“In Australia, in the final, it was not good enough. I lost in three sets, so that was quite simple. But the US Open final? I had a two-set lead, a break up, and I was serving for the match. That one, I regret.”
Next Stop: The French Open
After kicking off his clay-court season in Buenos Aires, Zverev’s eyes will be set on the French Open, where he reached the final last year. The 27-year-old held a two-sets-to-one lead over Carlos Alcaraz before ultimately falling short.
For now, however, his focus is on bouncing back and contending for the Argentina Open title.
