All You Need To Know As Andrey Rublev hires two-time Grand Slam winner as his coach after losing three matches in a row
Andrey Rublev Adds Two-Time Grand Slam Champion Marat Safin to Coaching Team
Andrey Rublev has made a significant change to his coaching staff as he looks to regain form on the ATP Tour.
The world No. 9 has endured a tough start to the 2025 season, currently holding a 9-7 record. His latest defeat at the Miami Open to Zizou Bergs extended his losing streak to three matches, following losses to Matteo Arnaldi (Indian Wells) and Quentin Halys (Dubai).
Despite winning the Qatar Open in Doha earlier this year, Rublev has struggled to maintain momentum. To turn things around, he has brought in former world No. 1 Marat Safin to assist him during the clay court season.
Safin Joins Rublev’s Team for Clay Season
According to Russian media outlet Bolshe, Safin will join Rublev’s camp while Fernando Vicente remains his primary coach.
“Marat Safin is Andrey Rublev’s new coach for the clay season. His first tournament with Rublev will be the Monte-Carlo Masters, starting April 7.” – Sofya Tartakova (@CentralCourt), March 29, 2025.
Rublev, a former Monte-Carlo Masters champion (2023), will hope to recapture his best form alongside Safin as he aims for a third career Masters 1000 title.
Rublev on His Relationship with Safin
Rublev has previously spoken about Safin’s influence on his career, revealing how the Russian legend helped him reset after a disappointing Wimbledon in 2024.
“I worked to fix my mindset because the problem wasn’t with my tennis. It’s all thanks to Marat Safin. We connected, and he helped me a lot. Big thanks to him.” – Andrey Rublev.
Safin’s Track Record on Clay
While Safin is best known for his US Open (2000) and Australian Open (2005) titles, he also had notable success on clay. His best Roland Garros performance came in 2002 when he reached the semifinals before losing to Juan Carlos Ferrero.
Key Clay Court Achievements:
- 2002 French Open SF: Lost to Juan Carlos Ferrero
- 2000 Hamburg Masters Final: Lost to Gustavo Kuerten
- 2002 Hamburg Masters Final: Lost to Roger Federer
- Titles on Clay (2000): Mallorca Open, Barcelona Open
If Rublev can replicate Safin’s past clay court success, his decision to add the Russian legend to his team could prove invaluable.
