Andrey Rublev’s struggles continue, with the Russian suffering a disappointing third-round exit at the Mutua Madrid Open. After benefiting from Gael Monfils’ withdrawal in the second round, Rublev hoped to build some momentum but instead fell to Alexander Bublik in a rollercoaster match.
Rublev, who recently teamed up with fellow Russian and former world No. 1 Marat Safin at the start of the clay season, has yet to see the results he hoped for under the new partnership. Despite Carlos Alcaraz’s withdrawal and Novak Djokovic’s early defeat opening up the draw, Rublev failed to capitalize.
After dropping the first set, Rublev responded emphatically by dominating the second with a 6-0 “bagel.” However, his form faltered again in the decider, allowing Bublik to seize the victory and celebrate dramatically on court.
A Steep Drop in the Rankings
This loss will cost Rublev dearly in the ATP rankings, knocking him out of the Top 15 for the first time in five years. He now heads into Roland Garros carrying little confidence.
Speaking candidly in his post-match press conference, Rublev admitted:
“I don’t know what to say honestly. I’m trying to stay optimistic, but it’s not easy. Apart from the week in Doha, my level this season has been disastrous.”
The 26-year-old is struggling to pinpoint the root cause of his issues:
“I don’t have a specific weakness—it’s a combination of many small factors that aren’t working. I hope things will eventually click, but I honestly don’t know how long it will take.”
Rublev now plans to regroup with his team and prepare for the upcoming Rome Masters, hoping to turn his season around.
