Djokovic was stunned in the second round by Alejandro Tabilo, marking his second defeat to the Chilean. However, Roddick believes the bigger picture matters more for the Serbian star.

“It should be viewed as normal. I don’t think the baseline for Novak is two Majors anymore. The real question is: can he peak for the Majors? Can he be as good once as he ever was?” Roddick said on a recent podcast.

Roddick also hinted that Djokovic’s participation in Monte Carlo may have been more about convenience than competitive drive:

“I don’t know if we’d see him play this event if he didn’t live up the street. This is almost paid practice for him.”

Looking ahead, the former US Open champion believes Djokovic will use the loss as fuel for the clay season:

“Come next Monday, he’ll still be in Monte Carlo training. Maybe it’s a matchup issue, but give Novak a good three or four weeks heading into Roland-Garros, and I still know who I’m picking in a best-of-five.”

Djokovic: “It was horrible”

Djokovic didn’t mince words when asked about the loss:

“I expected to at least put in a decent performance—not like this. I didn’t have high expectations, but I didn’t think it would be this bad.”

Despite the setback, all eyes will be on the 24-time Grand Slam champion as he prepares for another run at the French Open title.
