Andy Roddick Questions Holger Rune’s Involvement in PTPA Lawsuit Controversy

Former World No. 1 Andy Roddick has voiced his concerns over Holger Rune being caught in the crossfire of the ongoing Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA) lawsuit. Roddick questioned why Rune was singled out in the controversy, despite not being a Grand Slam champion or a top-10 ATP player at the time of his invitation to a Saudi Arabian exhibition event.

Quoting the lawsuit’s statement, Roddick highlighted: “The only player invited to the Saudi Arabian exhibition who had never won a Grand Slam, and the only player ranked outside the ATP top 10.”

Roddick Criticizes PTPA’s Handling of Rune’s Case

Speaking on his show, Roddick criticized the PTPA for its inconsistent stance. “Can you be a group that claims to represent all players, yet release a statement after the Jannik Sinner situation throwing him under the bus? And now, you’re getting the details of Rune’s case wrong while also taking unnecessary shots at him throughout this lawsuit—that’s just unnecessary,” he said.

Tennis analyst Jon Wertheim also weighed in, supporting Roddick’s stance and further scrutinizing the PTPA’s approach.

Rune’s Marketability Defended

Roddick defended Rune’s inclusion in the exhibition, arguing that his marketability justified his invitation. “If there’s an exhibition happening and Rune, despite not winning a major, is invited, it’s because the organizers believe he’s a marketable name. If I were representing players, I would fully support that,” he stated.
