Andy Roddick Responds to Calls for Carlos Alcaraz to Fire Coach Juan Carlos Ferrero, Compares Him to Pete Sampras
Andy Roddick has strongly disagreed with recent calls for Carlos Alcaraz to part ways with his coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero. Drawing a comparison to tennis legend Pete Sampras, Roddick emphasized the need to reset expectations for the young Spanish star, who has already achieved remarkable success in his career.
Roddick expressed his views, stating, “Do you guys remember the times before the Big Three when players didn’t make finals every week? We need to reset expectations. Pete Sampras, as great as he was—14 Majors, six year-end No. 1 finishes—would lose in the third round sometimes. He’d win two Majors a year instead of three.”
He continued, “Carlos Alcaraz already has more Majors than Andy Murray, and he’s halfway to catching up with icons like Jimmy Connors and Andre Agassi. What he’s done already is absurd. Anyone calling for a coaching change doesn’t understand coaching at all.”
Roddick’s comments were echoed by Paul Annacone, a former coach of Roger Federer, who remarked on the volatility often associated with players like Alcaraz. “It’s a little crazy, but this wouldn’t be the first time we’ve seen crazy in the tennis world,” Annacone said. “We often jump to conclusions when great players face stumbling blocks, but we forget how young Alcaraz is and the complexity of his game and personality. His style, with so much variety, and his character, will likely bring a little more volatility.”
Both Roddick and Annacone stressed the importance of perspective when evaluating Alcaraz’s progress, suggesting that the young star’s future remains incredibly bright despite the occasional challenges he faces.
