Andy Roddick has shared some advice for Alex de Minaur ahead of his quarterfinal clash with world No.1 Jannik Sinner at the Australian Open 2025, offering insight into what the Aussie must do if he hopes to pull off an upset. Roddick, a former Grand Slam champion and world No.1 himself, emphasized that de Minaur needs to stick to a strategic game plan and focus on exploiting any potential vulnerabilities in Sinner’s game.

Roddick explained that de Minaur’s trademark speed and agility will be critical in the matchup. “He’s got to use his movement as an asset. Sinner’s power game is tough to counter, but Alex has the speed to make him hit that one extra shot. He’s got to stay in rallies, make Sinner uncomfortable, and force him into errors,” Roddick said during a media appearance.

In addition to defense, Roddick stressed the importance of variety in de Minaur’s game. “He can’t just rely on retrieving. He’s got to mix it up—use slices, change the pace, come to the net when he gets the chance. Against someone like Sinner, if you’re predictable, you’re going to be in trouble. The more Alex can disrupt Sinner’s rhythm, the better chance he’ll have.”

Roddick also pointed out that de Minaur’s serve could be a decisive factor. “We know his serve isn’t the biggest weapon, but he’s got to hit his spots and keep Sinner guessing. He needs to get free points on serve and not let Jannik dictate from the first ball of the rally. Variety and placement are key—he can’t afford to give Sinner a predictable return.”

Ultimately, Roddick acknowledged that it would be a tough task for de Minaur but noted that with the right mindset and tactical execution, an upset is possible. “Alex will need to play close to flawless tennis, but he’s got the tools. If he can stick to his strengths and make Sinner uncomfortable, especially with the home crowd behind him, he’s got a shot.”
