Andy Roddick didn’t hold back his frustration after hearing a commentator’s remarks about 16-year-old Mirra Andreeva during her Indian Wells final against Aryna Sabalenka. The teenage sensation made history by reaching the championship match, but instead of focusing on her remarkable achievements, some of the commentary left the former world No. 1 visibly annoyed.
Andreeva’s impressive run to the final was one of the biggest storylines of the tournament. The Russian teenager showcased extraordinary composure and skill, defeating top-ranked opponents on her way to the biggest final of her young career. However, Roddick took issue with the way some commentators framed the match, particularly in their assessment of Andreeva’s performance against Sabalenka.
“I was listening to the broadcast, and I just couldn’t believe what I was hearing,” Roddick said during his post-match analysis. “They were talking about Andreeva like she should be ashamed or embarrassed about how she was playing. Are you kidding me? She’s 16 years old and playing in a Masters 1000 final against one of the best players in the world!”
Sabalenka ultimately overpowered Andreeva in straight sets, using her experience and raw power to claim the title. However, Roddick believes the focus should have been on Andreeva’s incredible achievements rather than any perceived shortcomings.
“She was out there fighting, trying to problem-solve against a two-time Grand Slam champion, and instead of appreciating that, we’re critiquing her like she’s a veteran who’s underperforming? Give me a break,” Roddick added.
