Emma Raducanu looked back to her best during a stunning run to the quarterfinals at the Miami Open last month, defeating Emma Navarro and Amanda Anisimova before falling to Jessica Pegula in three sets.

However, the British star has not played since, having withdrawn from Great Britain’s Billie Jean King Cup team and a WTA event in France, citing a need to “re-evaluate.”

This decision has left former world No. 1 Andy Roddick confused and frustrated.

Roddick: “Why Recalibrate Now?”

Speaking on his Served with Andy Roddick podcast, the American questioned the timing of Raducanu’s break.

“Recalibrating what? She was playing great,” Roddick said. “She just found her form. Why is she recalibrating? What does that mean?”

“You finally get momentum, and then you stop. She looked like a top-ten player in Miami. Why put a speed bump in your season?”

Raducanu’s absence comes amid speculation that she may formally reunite with Mark Petchey, who supported her during the Miami Open. Roddick is a fan of that potential partnership.

“She looked relaxed with Petchey. They were playing that bouncy ball game before her match—it just looked very comfortable. I love Mark Petchey. He’s got a great tennis brain.”

A Pattern of Coaching Instability

Roddick also addressed Raducanu’s frequent coaching changes, expressing concern about the impact on her career.

“It’s tough to commit as a coach if it might only last two weeks. I hope she gives a coaching relationship time to grow. You’re narrowing the talent pool with so many quick exits.”

Raducanu has worked with a string of coaches over the last few years, including:

Date Coach Duration
Mar 2025 Vladimir Platenik 2 weeks
Jan 2025 Nick Cavaday 1 year
Jun 2023 Sebastian Sachs 6 months
Oct 2022 Dmitry Tursunov 3 months
Apr 2022 Torben Beltz 5 months
Sep 2021 Andrew Richardson 3 months
Jul 2021 Nigel Sears 4 months

Jon Wertheim: “Career Own-Goals”

Roddick’s co-host, Jon Wertheim, echoed his concerns, saying Raducanu’s career decisions often raise eyebrows.

“There are so many own-goals. The coaching changes, the withdrawals—even when she’s playing well—it’s all mystifying.”

Despite the frustration, Roddick hopes to see Raducanu settle into a more consistent routine, especially with Petchey possibly by her side.

“I think the world of Petch, and I think the world of Emma. I just hope four years from now, we’re not still having this conversation.”

Raducanu is expected to return at the Madrid WTA 1000 event beginning April 21, where she lost in the opening round last year.
